What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

The terms Counselling and Psychotherapy are very often used interchangeably. Both terms refer to ‘talk therapy’ where clients meet a qualified counsellor or therapist to discuss their difficulties. Counselling tends to refer to short – term therapy that involves working on dealing with a current, specific issue or stressor. Psychotherapy involves more indepth work that explores the underlying issues that are affecting the client’s current situation. It deals with all aspects of the person.

Who Needs Therapy?

Therapy can help anyone who has become overwhelmed by difficulties in their lives. It provides a safe, nurturing, non – judgemental space to explore what is going on for the client. Therapy can also help to maintain mental wellbeing. In the fast – paced world that we live in self care can sometimes be at the bottom of a very long list of priorities. Therapy can equip clients with the tools to deal with life’s stressors by providing alternative perspectives as well as strategies to overcome life’s challenges. In this way it can act as a protective measure that safeguards the client’s mental health.

How long will it take?

Therapy works best when the client and therapist meet at the same time and day each week. Each session is 50 minutes long. Duration of therapy will vary from client to client. At any time the client is free to end the therapy sessions. Ideally this is discussed in advance to ensure a successful ending.
